1970s Roberto Cavalli Forest Green Corduroy Rose-Painted Jacket & Trouser Set

From Roberto Cavalli's earliest and most collectible era — the 1970s, when the Florentine designer first burst onto the international fashion scene with his revolutionary approach to fabric painting and his fearless embrace of folkloric maximalism. Before Cavalli became synonymous with animal print glamour, he was producing some of the most inventive and artisan-driven pieces in Italian ready-to-wear, and this two-piece suit is a supreme example of that founding vision. It was precisely this technique — painting directly onto fabric — that first brought Cavalli international recognition and set him apart from every other designer of his generation. Cut from a wide-wale forest green corduroy, the fitted jacket and straight-leg trousers are trimmed throughout in a dark floral printed cotton ribbon and adorned with hand-painted roses at the chest, shoulders, and sleeves — each bloom rendered directly onto the fabric in rich reds and greens with extraordinary painterly freedom and detail. The jacket features a fitted bodice, pointed collar, and coral button closures; the trousers mirror the ribbon trim down the outseams. A piece that predates the current maximalist revival by fifty years and does it better — wearable fine art from the very hands that invented the form.
